Thrill of the Hunt

In my household, we have two kinds of shoppers: the utilitarian shopper and the entertainment shopper.  My Handsome Husband only goes to stores when he has something in mind that he needs to buy, such as caulk, light bulbs, or milk.  He does not particularly enjoy the experience.  I, on the other hand,  look forward to the retail experience of looking at everything and finding something that I didn't even know I desperately wanted.  If you shop like I do, and you haven't tried thrift store shopping yet, I would highly recommend the experience.  Shopping in a mall or department store full of beautiful displays and  chock-full of new products meant to catch your eye is no challenge!  I find shopping in a thrift store and finding treasures to be FAR more rewarding.  The thrill of the hunt is heightened and the feeling of triumph when something is yours is pretty addicting.  Example du jour: I found this silk skirt at Goodwill.  It was brand new with the original Ann Taylor tags and $88 tab still on and I took it home for $5!  Haha! Revelry! Delight! Victory!  It's not just shopping, it's winning!

Happy Monday! Go check out other Eva Mendes-inspired looks at Two Birds' blog!

  4. Great find! Congratulations. The skirt looks very Scandanavian, especially with the wreath on the door...and your trusty sled dog by your side.

  5. Awh you brighten my day each time you post. I loved hearing about your thrifting success and the thrill of the hunt. I love doing that, too. Ya know, I really need to hit my local shop tomorrow. That will be great! Thanks for the inspiration, Vivienne.

  6. Can you be both? I'm a utilitarian shopper when I buy grocery and things like that (otherwise I would go home with a jar of Nutella all the time), but I admit I'm more like you when shopping for clothes. And I did find a Helmut Lang skirt at Goodwill with the original price tag of $425 (marked down to $50, but still...) and got it for $5. When I moved home I sold it to Buffalo Exchange for $25. Win.

  7. Sounds like my husband and me... My husband won't buy anything in a store unless it's something from Apple or some groceries. I, on the other hand, am at the Goodwill every Sunday because I'm addicted to the hunt and possibilities of finding something awesome!

  8. wow, this is brilliant! you've even added your sweet doggie! and what a beautiful skirt that is! goes perfectly with your white tee and classy belt.
btw, E. doesn't actually enjoy shopping very much.. he is always looking for a chair or a sofa in the stores and trying to sneak away, haha. but sometimes he likes thrift stores when there are all kinds of goodies being sold, not only clothes. though he does wear thrifted stuff when I bring him something good.

  9. $5 what a bargain! It's such a nice skirt, love the print.
I'm an entertainment shopper too but like you my man also hates having to shop whether it's for milk or jeans he finds it a painful experience.
The thing I love about secondhand shopping is that everything is one of a kind, it's more novel when there aren't 10 of the same thing in front of you, like you've found a treasure that no one else will have.

  10. Great find! I feel the same way about "the hunt" - I swear that my heart starts beating faster when I enter a thrift or charity shop! I really do feel like I'm hunting: my eagle eye roves over everything, and then when I find the deal, there's a surge of euphoria! :)

  16. My husband can be an entertainment shopper especially at places like Target or Costco.
I tried to hit a consignment store yesterday but I got their too early. I couldn't rearrange my day to come back. I'll have to try again another day.

  17. Yes, I know exactly what you mean about the thrill of the hunt. But that's also why I stopped shopping and thrifting. I found I was doing it for entertainment and as a way to be creative. When I was actually being creative in my studio, I didn't have any urge to go shopping. And now that I'm sewing and refashioning whatever I already have, I find I'm even more creative and resourceful. It's not as fast, but it's more satisfying.

  23. Abso-damn-lutely, Vivienne! My husband is capable of walking into the drug store for band-aids and coming out with ONLY band-aids. YAWN! I come out with band-aids, the nail polish color I've been looking for, which reminds me I need emory boards, and I should get some stickers for the toddler, is that a sale on face wash????

So much more fun! Congratulations on your skirt. Seriously! Shout that one from the rooftops!!!!!

  24. Love that phrase! It's not shopping, it's winning! You are so right. The thrill of unearthing an amazing bargain among clutter is unequaled. My fiance is the same way too, would never go into the store unless it's absolutely necessary. You rock at thrifting, wish I could tag along some time :-)

  25. I absolutely agree--the thrill of the hunt is what makes me love thrift stores! I hardly shop at the mall anymore and when I do I get bored so fast. There's just no challenge and your guarunteed to be buying the same stuff as someone else.

  27. Oh I know for asure we have the same shopping style! What a great find, the skirt is beautiful.

  28. That skirt is so pretty, what an awesome find!! My shopping style depends on my mood. Some days I have something in mind so I look around until I find it, and other days I'm just there for the experience, just looking for whatever catches my eye. Usually that's when I hit the thrift stores!

  29. OMG Patrick and I are the same way! LOL I love thrifting for the very thrill of the hunt as well. That and when you find a beauty in the thrift store, you are likely to be the only one who is wearing it no matter where you go! I love your pretty skirt!
