Style Imitating Art: Caves of Lascaux

Dear Friends,
This week I am hosting Style Imitating Art and I thought I'd go old school on everyone and choose the Caves of Lascaux.  I started reading about it and finding images online.  Scholars seem to disagree on exactly how old these paintings are, the range being somewhere between 15,000 and 30,000 years old. I was looking at a virtual tour  and I announced to my Handsome Husband, "I want to go see the Caves of Lascaux!"
HH: In France? (where he lived for almost a year in college)
Me: Yes.
HH: I've already been there.
Me: What?!
HH: (Looking at my monitor) Yeah, I've been there.
Me: Fine, I'll go with someone else!
HH: Don't be like that!
Me: Why didn't I know you've been there? Do you have pictures?
HH: No, you weren't allowed to take any.
Me: Oh, well, what was it like?
HH: I dunno, it was like kid drawings on a wall.
Me: Was it dark? Were there candles? Was there electricity in there?
HH: I dunno, there was some kind of dim lighting
Me: Was it stuffy? Was it crowded? Did you have to crouch?
HH: No, it wasn't crowded, they only allowed a certain number of people in there at a time. Some parts of it I had to get down low. I don't think they let everyone go to every part of it.
Me: So you don't want to go again with me sometime?
HH: I didn't think it was that cool.
Me: What?!
HH: Yeah, it was like kid scribbles.
Kid scribbles or not, I think these images are pretty darn cool.  I will be wearing an outfit inspired by these doodles sometime this week and posting it Monday night (Sept 24th.)  If you'd like to play, send me a photo of you in your outfit (and your link if you have a blog post) by Monday afternoon.  Thanks, guys!
Here's something I wore this weekend. It actually kinda goes with the art. Maybe I'm done? That would be no fun...

Have you been to the Caves of Lascaux? Anyone want to go with me?

  1. I do! But do we have to take a plane? I hate planes.
I think the drawings are wonderful. This would be fascinating to see in real life. And now....for my closet....hmmmmm.

  2. If you can't get there, you have to see Warner Herzog's 3-D documentary on the most recent cave found in France that is also dated as having the oldest cave paintings. It's called "Cave of Forgotten Dreams" and you can get it on Netflix. But if you can ever see it in a theatre in 3-D it's absolutely mesmerizing. OMG. He shot it in 3-D because they wouldn't allow him to go off the small pathway or use extra lighting or be in there with more than 3 crew. So the light is flickering and the music is incredible...

  3. I would totally go with you. Well, I want to go to France, period, but I do want to check this out. Must have been amazing to see it in person (I can't believe your husband would simply dismiss it as "looking like kid's scribbles"!!!)

  7. gosh, I would totally love to go if I had the chance! I also want to discover Paris and everything it has to offer. too bad my free time is totally limited and so are the people who could travel with me without complaining too much. this autumn I and my mom wanted to go to Turkey and when we were going to buy the tickets it came out those spots were already sold. crap, I would say! and I can't change my holidays because public procurements have all those strict dates. okay, I'll stop complaining now. those caves look awesome after all!

  14. Yes I would go, I live in France, so get your butt over here and we'll go together! Sadly the original caves aren't open anymore due to a fungus growing on the walls and damage caused by the carbon monoxide in our exhaled breath, but there's a replica cave for people to see. So cool, thanks for sharing as I'm still learning about all the great sights in France! Cute outfit too. :)

  15. no, Vivienne, you are funny!

I haven't ever heard of these caves and I was a Humanities major! (where did I miss that?) I'd love to go with you esp. since HH is being a 'stick in the mud'. Don't you just love that phrase? It is so similar to 'dumber than a bag of hammers'!

hahahahaha. I WANT TO BE IN ON THE BLOG HOP/ THINGY. Sign me up! (now pray that my computer and I get this problem with my Picasa program solved today) thank you

  17. isn't it fun to still be surprised by little things you didn't know about your HH? ;) i'm totally digging your jacket. i was watching a guilty pleasure night time soap called L.A. Complex, and the character Beth reminds me of a younger version of you. plus she's really smart like you are too. check the link below to see if you agree or disagree.

  18. This is a great convo. I am still discovering things about my husband of 7years that surprise me. I am also shocked that some things are just not his cup of tea like, he hates thrifting and shopping. What? I am participating. Love your choice. dawn suitcase vignettes xo

  22. Those pictures looks awesome! Way more than kid scribbles. They are stunning and far more technically brilliant than they first appear.
