Hate-orade
(No names will be given in order to protect the innocent as well as the guilty.) I recently read a post from a blogger I like. It referenced another blog. I clicked on it and was sucked into a vortex of snark and vitriol. The blog is dedicated to being incredibly mean to a few target blogs, apparently. The author clearly approves of four or five other blogs. And it mercilessly shoots down others. Well, ok, not exactly mercilessly- they never attack people's faces or weight. But clothes, poses, hair, nails, shoes, and bad grammar are all fair game. Oh, I am ashamed to say I read it WAY too long. It felt kind of good to mock people with waaaay more money than I have. I even agreed with some of their ideas. They seem to especially hate two bloggers for whom style blogging is a full time job. Ok, I understand if someone's blog is their main source of income that maybe they could be more innovative... but seriously- if you really hate a blog, STOP READING IT! Don't use it as fodder for your random rage!
Dear Readers,
If you ever get sick of me, please just stop reading. Stop following. It's ok. No hard feelings. It's been a good to share the times we've had. Please don't write blog post after blog post about how much you hate me and I'll extend the same courtesy. Deal?
Sincerely,
Vivienne

Firstly: I really like your outfit; the skirt, especially, is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteSecondly: I, personally, look forward to your posts and I'm not going anywhere, you're stuck with me.
Thirdly: If what one writes is mostly vitriole, snark, and unkindness it speaks to me of an impoverished attitude and imagination. Creativity doesn't need hatefulness as a prop.
i really like this look
ReplyDeletethe kind of elegance of the top and the school girl feel of the skirt is a great juxtaposition
yeah, i have come across some blogs like that, i agree if you hate it, why are you wasting your time on it????
brett
I get sucked into that stuff, too, but I would never say I HATE anyone! The internet is like a nice comfy pillow you can hide behind while you hurl insults at people. I realized a while ago tho, that I would never be that mean in real life tho! Usually, if I find I'm getting annoyed by a blogger or their stylings, then I do just what you suggested, I stop reading! I rarely look at Lookbook anymore, because I'm so sick of cut-off jean shorts and guys sitting in the street (apparently very fashionable), and I don't want to be tempted to leave snarky comments. It's also just not how I want to be known in the blogging world!
ReplyDeleteAnyhoo, you always write great posts. I love reading them :) And the bracelets are so cute!
Ew, you got sucked into that negativity? When I got mentioned on the Huffington's bloggers for woman over 50 list I saw a young persons comment that we all looked like blogs from the 90's. I wanted to leave a comment so badly that said, "Your face looks like it's from the 90's." haha!! Something my son would say.
ReplyDeleteI could NEVER get tired of your blog. You're a smart one, a pretty one, and stylish to boot!
Now, for this smashing transition-to-fall outfit. It's fantastic!! Love it against that brick wall too. Is that the sea wall behind your house? lol
I'll admit it. Sometimes I read the forums for Get Off My Internets. It's amazing how much hate some people have for strangers. Seriously if you don't like someone stop reading their blog.
ReplyDeleteI've read blog/posts like this as well. Mostly attacking or making fun of bloggers that have become very popular. I will admit that i usually have a "disconnect" when bloggers start receiving a majority of the stuff they post for free but i don't think it's ok to attack them! As you say, just stop reading. :)
ReplyDeleteLove this outfit! I thrifted a skirt like that a couple of winters ago but sadly had to Ebay it when i lost some weight. :-/
Love your arm candy. xA
ReplyDeleteTo that I heartily concur. Blog world is not total reality time for me, more like let's think of some great thoughts that help with the "feel goods." I totally enjoy your blog.
ReplyDeleteCreation over destruction right? Its so much easier to put someone down than it is to create something of your own. But it is so much more rewarding to create rather than tear people down.
ReplyDeleteI personally really enjoy your blog. Like you, I am addicted to thrifting... I love finding lovely items with cheap price tags and I also love that vintage clothing and garments from goodwill and salvation army help us reduce our world's carbon foot print! Hate to say it, but you are stuck with me as a reader : ) I love your positive and frugal outlook.
Yours,
Nico

I've been blogging for about 2 years now and I must say there are both good & ugly aspects to it. I've unsubscribed to a number of bloggers because of their attitudes and bias toward others. I just walk away. I think it's very unprofessional and immature to behave in that manner. Stick to your topic and if someone is being ugly let them go on. If they're talking about you that much, you must have something good going on. hahaha When I was younger I use to care what people said about me, now I don't give a damn. LOL
ReplyDeleteVivienne, I love your outfit! I had a skirt similar to the one you're wearing. It was grey and black. I wore it until it came apart. HaHa You look so pretty!

I truly don't get why people need to spew hate on others. It's really very simple. If you don't like the blog just close the browser. I fear there is too much negative competition among fashion bloggers. I think your blog is great. You share your life and experiences with us and make us laugh with you
ReplyDeleteFabulous skirt and your dog is supper cute... Too bad they don't allow us pets at my apartment.
I'm not defending the trolls, but I do have to say sometimes those mean, vitriol snarks help me gain some perspective in my own blogging. That being said, I think you're doing a great job here. As long as you're enjoying this and happy with the quality of posts that you put up, the negative won't affect you.
ReplyDeleteDeal. I think I have seen the same blog that you are talking about way back when I first started blogging. What a waste of time and energy! How sad is someone's life to harbor so much negativity! I'd much rather spend my time and energy being nice and saying positive things than by being a judgmental brat. I mean, do you know the bloggers personally? If not, then you can't very well make a judgment on them. usually I find that this comes out of insecurity or jealousy--both very unfortunate emotions.
ReplyDeletei definitely and 100% agree with you. I mean if you dont like what you see, jst dont read it. Its that simple.
ReplyDeletenways talking abt your outfit today, u look amazing!! love that skirt and how it hugs your curves
xx
Your dog is so cute! That 'haters' blog you're talking about sounds awful but, I gotta admit, also intriguing... ;)
ReplyDeleteLife etc
holy hotness, classy outfit all levels. very pretty photos. i want to hug your dog, lucy is her name, right? vivienne, i agree with you wholeheartedly here! i try to avoid reading that. just of the thought turns my stomach. oh, i'm glad you got the jokes on my last post. ;)
ReplyDeleteI have nothing against attacks on poor grammar. We are writing things for the whole world to see, is there something wrong with proof reading and sounding intelligent?
ReplyDeleteBut yeah, there is far too negativity out there. If you don't like a blog, stop reading it. No reason to be cruel.
As for you, both you and your dog are just adorable.
Chic on the Cheap
I'm kind of with you on the grammar bit, although I must admit I make the occasional gaffe and scramble to fix it as soon as I find it. Sometimes my Mama even calls me and alerts me to it. Got to love moms.
DeleteI think some people have way too much time on their hands or they are just plain envious of the success of others. I absolutely love your skirts. You look stunning in it and the black blouse really makes it stand out. I have to say, your dog has the poses down :)
ReplyDeleteThis looks so great on you and draws attention to your tiny waist. Your puppy is precious too!
ReplyDeleteOf course the hateful bloggers who are targeting others have probably avoided turning the microscope on themselves but know that they need to. Always, when there are hateful things being said...the speaker is not enjoying their own life much...if they were they would not make time to do this!
Wow! It always surprises me (I'm not sure why...) that there's so much hatred and negativity out there on the internet (duh, right?). But it still boggles my mind. If they hate something so much, why are they wasting so much of their time on it? They may need a new hobby... Just sayin'.
ReplyDeleteI love these shots of you and your dog! You look well suited together, him with his fluff and you with your tartan. What a lovely summer outfit!
Eeee your Burnese Mountain Dog <3 I just adopted a Burnese/Saint Bernard mix puppy... She's going to be a giant. Anyway, that plaid maxi skirt is just amazing.. Every time I see your thrifted items I get jealous and want to plan a road trip to Seattle, haha.
ReplyDeleteRavishingly
Vivienne, I will never get sick of you! I think you're adorable!
ReplyDeleteLOVE,
Connie*
to be honest you grew some pretty big interest in me. I didn't know such blog exists and now I kind of would like to see what it's all about because it's interesting to discover how pathetic some people can be.
ReplyDeleteactually the first thing I wanted to say was how fierce that outfit is. I love everything about it. and your dog as well. what a cutiepie!
Maiken,
Maikeni blogi - part of me
Your dog is really cute and your skirt is great :)
ReplyDeleteI'm not sick of you! I'm staying here!
ReplyDeleteI have also found myself sucked into reading things that are less kind to others and then I sit back and think, ok, life is just too short to be negative all the time! So I try to avoid them as much as possible, but they are definitely out there.
Loving your plaid skirt, it's super awesome and makes me think of cool Fall evenings!!
Hi puppy!
I have so much stuff to catch up on. Been totally MIA but after reading this I thought of you http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/48678819#.UDZOkY4qm_E
ReplyDeleteI've missed so much and been trying to get back to the swing of things but can't seem to get back. So much posts I have to read. I think that the person who is hating on the other bloggers might want to be Perez Hilton. When he started he was doing the same thing except it's making fun of celebrities but now he's stopped due to realizing that it's a form of bullying which is what these bloggers are doing. Just stop reading and don't hate!
I love your bracelets :)
ReplyDeleteOMG I am so curious as to who this is... that seems so ridiculous to me that anyone would go out of their way to talk about others. Fashion is a personal thing and people don't (or shouldn't at least) get dressed just to impress other bloggers. They wear what they like and feel comfortable in. That is so crazy to me that someone is doing that in this blogosphere because the main things I see are people uplifting each other and expressing to others that they should wear what ever they like no matter if it's on trend or not. People are so rude sometimes.
ReplyDeleteanyways :) ... I love this outfit, the skirt is so cute! I hope you dont take offense to this but it reminds me of a modern 90s look that I have been LOVING! And I love that pup so much. Such a gorgeous face!!
your skirt is just perfect .. I like it because it reminds me kilt .. and I'm addicted to kilts! =)
ReplyDeleteI loved this post and how you handled it. you are tremendous. yes, in Seattle I don't remember seeing quail, but I did see an EAGLE.
ReplyDeleteYou pooch is so adorable and I just adore your maxi skirt, what a lovely prints and arm candy

Wow, I didn't know there were blogs devoted to bashing other bloggers! How sad. While I do think there is some luck and timing involved, I think that usually successful people (and bloggers) work really hard to be where they are. But again, if you don't like someone's blog, I agree with you--don't read it! Makes sense to me. :)
ReplyDeleteThat's unfortunate that someone would spend his/her time hating on someone else's blog. Blogging (depending on how people feel about it) is such a vulnerable thing; you're totally putting your ideas in the web for people to read and judge. Maybe that hating blogger is a sort of attention whore... Writing negativity for attention.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I think your blog is wonderful! I also like your outfit... I've been thinking of thrifting some plaid! Maybe I can find something special on sunday.
Hi Vivienne,
ReplyDeleteIt does not surprise me what you said about blogs devoted to bashing other blogs - I feel sorry for that or those people, they are not happy people for sure - and nothing best to do, i feel sorry for them -
I love your blog Vivienne - btw, the pic with your dog is simply amazing!
Ariane xxxx
This makes me so sad for those women, but so proud of you, Vivienne! Women hating on women is such a poisonous thing. It's almost always birthed out of insecurity, where no one wins. There have been blogs I've unsubscribed to because I felt they were saying things that left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I believe blogging is a privilege and we should conduct ourselves with kindness and some degree of professionalism. I love that you are a blogger with integrity! ~Continuing Faithful Follower, Sarah
ReplyDeleteP.S. ADORE that skirt, Vivienne. So many remixing possibilities!
Oh no, and well, oh well. I'm stopping by to nominate you for a Liebster Award, dear Vivienne and here I see you've already received one just days ago. Drat and drat. Nevermind, mum's the word. It's the thought that counts. I won't tell, if you won't...
ReplyDeleteThat's a shame. One thing I've always liked about fashion blogs is how courteous and supportive everyone is.
ReplyDeleteHaha you make a very valid point that I agree with! If they're not interested in reading certain blogs, why are they still reading them? People confuse me sometimes.
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, I love your plaid skirt! I was almost expecting a Scottie dog to be sitting beside you, but your dog is so cute that it works too, hehe :)
Julia
You look amazing and your dog is so cute :)
