The proper response to a compliment is, "Thank you." I've taught this to my students year after year. I hold regular class meetings where each child compliments the one next to her/him in order to practice seeing and speaking the good in everyone. I teach kids how to give good compliments (the best ones are about a person's heart or ideas or abilities not their looks) and how to respond appropriately ("Thank you.") And yet, I consistently fail at this! My friend just dropped by, told me I looked nice and I said, "Mweuh." Oops. Ellie, if you're reading this, "Thank you."
Today's outfit was inspired by Katie Holmes' hair. Is that weird? I was reading the Katie Holmes interview in the latest Elle magazine. My favorite part of the article is the beginning when Katie lets the writer try on her coat...
"It's a sort of haute barn jacket, made of the kind of lustrous black suede that you have to stop yourself from reaching out absentmindedly to stroke... The coat is lightweight but enveloping, velvety outside, and inside, silky as a rabbit's ear, with a charmeuse lining the color of ballet shoes..."
This description of an obviously well made coat reminded me of one of Elizabeth Cline's questions in Overdressed: Is the quality of your clothing good or is it merely good enough?
The magazine helped me better understand the book's message about quality garments... While Katie's coat may be on a whole different level of opulence up from "good" this paragraph certainly gives me a goal: to find/keep only the items that make me swoon a little. Off the top of my head, only a few items in my closet have that quality and texture that makes me want to pet them (hello handmade silk charmeuse wedding dress...). The next time I'm out shopping, I'll definitely be looking for more luxurious fabrics that are very well made, not just good enough or cheap enough.
What's the BEST thing in your closet?

Thank you! It's my favorite skirt right now .

hooray for 2 cute chocolate brown outfits in 1 post! you look very lovely in both. i dig the bracelets too. now let's talk about how smart your brain is. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you! I think you're smart, too!

It's so easy to make excuses or to resist a compliment. I need to practice a simple "thank you" too. Thanks for the reminder.
ReplyDeleteThat skirt looks great on you!
Thank you, Joni!
DeleteIt's such a great idea, teaching your students how to give and receive compliments gracefully. Sadly, there is too great a focus on the negative in our culture so BIG kudos to you for doing something to change that.
ReplyDeleteI like both the outfits (especially since one of my favourite clothing colours is brown) but have to say the high-low skirt outfit is gorgeous. Mayhap you were getting admiring glances because you looked so stunning? I would certainly think so!
Thank you! Sometimes I think the class meeting is the most important thing I do!

YOU LOOK BEAUTIFUL!!!

Thanks!
DeleteI like that peplum effect you've managed to pull off with the top and the asymmetrical skirt. oh and I love the blue shoes and your fabulous arm party!
ReplyDeleteMaiken,
Maikeni blogi - part of me
Thank you. I'm completely in love with peplum right now and resisting buying something new!

Love both outfits but particularly that high-low skirt on you! So pretty, and it's no wonder you got lots of looks :)
ReplyDeleteI often have a hard time accepting compliments too. "Your hair looks good today" followed by "Ohhh no it doesn't, it's all frizzy". I hate that I can't just say thank you! Working on it :)
Thanks, Megan.
DeleteI think you were getting looks with the high-low skirt because they thought you looked super stylish! My wedding dress is also the best thing in my closet. I want to shorten it to cocktail length and dye it another color so I can wear it again but haven't gotten around to it yet. Have a great weekend!

Aw, thanks! What color would you dye your dress?
DeleteAs I grow older, I see the improtance and need for politeness. It takes you a long way. It's really nice of you to realise your error and say thank you. I really like your outfit. I don't know where Katie Holmes hair comes in, but uh, you look good. I have a few luxurious pieces, only I don't wear them enough just cos I want them to last forever

Katie's hair is brown and very straight, so I put on a brown dress and straightened my hair?! I think your luxurious pieces are probably built to last forever, but I totally get wanting to save something!

Both outfits are great -- love the bracelets! I have a couple of (male) friends who are die-hard thrifters and yard salers, and they can spot cashmere and linen a mile away. They are always wearing something that's just a little nicer, just a little more luxurious. Smart fellas!
ReplyDeleteThanks! It sounds like your friends would be great shopping buddies!

I love that you teach your students about how to give nice compliments! It really is an important skill to learn!
ReplyDeleteYou look fantastic in that skirt, I don't know that I would be able to pull something like that off quite as nicely! I honestly don't know what the best item in my closet is, I mean I agree, my wedding dress is likely up there. I am going to have to look through and ponder that question a bit!
Thanks, Beth. It turns out I don't have a LOT that are very well made, and most of them are jeans and black tops. Good basics, but pretty boring for a blog!

OMG! I love the arm candy! What great colors:)
ReplyDeleteXO Tami
Thanks!
DeleteI love black and brown paired together!

Thank you!
DeleteI have the hardest time accepting compliments too! You should teach a class like this to grown women! LOL I love your pretty brown dress Vivienne!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Robin! Actually, I have a hard time doing some of my other life lessons myself- for example, I'm really great at coaching kids through communicating their anger to each other and problem solving to repair friendships, but when I get mad, especially at a friend, communicating is the last thing I want to do!

first you rock that hi/low skirt!
ReplyDeleteand next - i'm weird with taking compliments too. i usually blurt out where i got it from or try and tell a weird story. i'm learning more now because constantly wearing dresses makes me stick our here.
and i love this brown dress! i feel like you look so great in these really earthy colors - i love them on you.

Thanks, Katherine! It IS hard to take compliments, I'm glad I'm not the only one who does weird stuff!
Deletelove the high low trend so fun! and sure you can borrow it ;)

Thanks, Jessica!
Deletei'm jealous of your blue flats... they're so pretty! I'm terrible at compliments too. I often start rambling about how and why I own whatever is being complimented or brag about how cheap I got it... or I just ramble. Both of your outfits are super adorable.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Steph. The flats are from Melissa: http://www.shopmelissa.com/home

I love your outfit from yesterday! (and today too of course!) But I know what you mean... whenever I wear a particularly trendy piece of clothing I always feel like people are staring. But have no worries, your outfit was great!!

Cup of Tea
Thanks Julia! I think yesterday's was definitely more fashion forward. I was also walking through a sketchy neighborhood in that skirt, so I was afraid people were getting the wrong idea with me showing so much leg!

you look great in the high-low look! I really enjoyed your meaningful post here...while I appreciate the designer goods and their "high quality" I waver on the line between good vs. "good enough." While I would love to always own the good, sometimes the good just isn't practical in a budget. Aside from clothing...even when it comes to food. Organic vs. non-organic...a fine-line between good vs. good enough.

Thanks, Nancy! I think you must be ahead of me on food quality- I definitely buy local, but not necessarily organic. I do try to have as few processed foods as possible, though, and stick to high nutrient ingredients!

I think it's great that you have your kids practice complimenting each other (and emphasizing compliments of the heart!)!! I also like what you said about quality clothing. That's something that I've been trying to keep in mind, too, lately! Ditto all comments on your hi-low skirt and arm party! Very cute.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Ally!

i am loving that hi lo skirt and top! that brown and black look so beautiful together and i love your sandals & bag. saying thank you should be in everyone's vocabulary! hmmm, i have a lot of tailored outfits in my closet for work. they're not uber expensive, but just classics :)
